SAINT LEO, Fla. – After holding ninth-ranked Wayne State to just two hits on the day, the 14th-ranked Saint Leo baseball team shutout the Warriors, 5-0, on Monday night at home for the non-conference win.
Through the first seven innings Wayne State was held hitless, meanwhile the Lions took full advantage by jumping to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning after graduate student
Zach Benson singled through the left side, driving in seniors
Caleb Adams and
Cooper Miles. In the third, graduate student
Buck Anderson blasted a solo home run down left field line extending the Saint Leo edge to 3-0. Later in the sixth, junior Callen Moss went yard to straight-away center field to push the Lion margin to 4-0. After graduate student
Yazael Nunez stole second and third bases, he was batted-in by Adams with a single through the left side, 5-0, in the eighth.
On the mound, the pitching rotation for the Lions was lethal as it notched 18 total strikeouts against top-10 ranked Wayne State. Freshman
Russell Sandefer started for Saint Leo and tallied his third win of the season while recording six strikeouts in 3.0 innings. In relief, senior
Evan Wolf notched a career-high seven strikeouts on 52 pitches in 4.0 innings. Senior
Kaelan Racculia registered a trio of strikeouts and only allowing two hits in his 1.0 inning on the mound. To close the game, graduate student
Nick Jennings struck out a pair of batters in the ninth.
Adams finished the game 2-for-3 at the dish with one RBI and a run scored. Anderson was 1-for-2 which included the homer in addition to being walked twice. Benson recorded a hit and two RBI followed by Moss with one hit and one RBI.
Saint Leo returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 13 as it hosts Purdue Northwest in a non-conference matchup at 2 p.m.
