Lashutka's Pitching Leads Baseball to Series Victory over AUM

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University baseball team earned a doubleheader split with Auburn University at Montgomery on Saturday at the Thomas B. Southard Stadium. The Lions clinched a series victory over AUM with a 3-1 win in game one. AUM salvaged a victory in the final game of the series putting up 11 runs in the final two innings of a seven-inning affair.

GM 1: Saint Leo 3, AUM 1

Luke Lashutka put together an impressive first start of the 2024 season. The senior from Ohio pitched seven scoreless innings allowing just four hits while striking out eight.

AUM's starting pitcher matched Lashukta, allowing just one hit the first time through the Lions lineup.

The Saint Leo batters seemed to be a magnet in the fourth inning as the Lions loaded up the bases on a base hit and a pair of hit by pitches. After Josh Davis and Luis Rivero each got on via the HBP, Zach Benson took one for the team and put the Lions on the board as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Callen Moss gave Saint Leo a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out RBI base hit to left that scored Buck Anderson.

An inning later, Anderson drove in a run of his own as he singled through the right side of the infield to score Yazael Nunez from third putting the home team up 3-0.

AUM got on the board in the top of the ninth with a one-out double off the bat of Zach Dew.

Drew Rudsinski came on to close out the game and got a strikeout swinging and a fly out to right to secure the series victory for the Green and Gold.

GM 2: AUM 13, Saint Leo 3 – (7 inns.)
AUM's lead off hitter, Tyrese Rooks opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as he belted a line drive over the low cut wall in right field for a two-run shot. This marked the first time in 2024 the Lions trailed.

Saint Leo responded in the bottom of the third with a run of its own. Nunez scored on a ground out off the bat of Ryan Robinson.

Robinson gave the Lions their only lead of game two as he dropped a base hit to right that scored Dylan Mass putting the home team on top, 3-2.

The lead would not last long as the Warhawks turned a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 advantage with four runs in the sixth inning. AUM took full advantage of the sixth inning as the Lions pitching staff could not find the strike zone. Back-to-back wild pitches allowed the visitors to regain the lead, a lead they quickly built on.

Leading 6-3 after the sixth, AUM added a touchdown in the top of the seventh to practically seal up a victory in the final game of the series.

Saint Leo hits the road for a three-game series at Flagler (Feb. 9-10) next weekend. The Lions are back home a week later for three games against USC Beaufort (Feb. 16-18).
