Heidel's Pitching and Nunez Hitting Lead Baseball to 10-2 Season Opening Victory over AUM

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University baseball team used a pair of three-run innings to earn a commanding 10-2 season opening victory against Auburn University at Montgomery on Friday night. Graduate student Yazael Nunez's hitting and a six-inning shutout from senior pitcher Brayden Heidel led the Lions to open the season 1-0.

Heidel pitched six shutout innings while allowing four hits and striking out four as the Lions built a 6-0 lead. AUM threatened in the top of the third, putting runners on the corners with two outs but Heidel got a strikeout looking to end the threat and keep the Warhawks off the board.

Nunez laced a two-RBI triple right over the inside of the third base bag to score Zach Benson and Cooper Miles for a 2-0 Lions lead. Dylan Mass drove in the eventual game-winning run as Nunez scored on the single up the middle.

Nunez once again had a big hit for the Lions in the bottom of the fourth inning as his two-RBI base hit forced the Warhawks to take out their starting pitcher. Mass came to the plate with the bases loaded and put the ball in play as Benson tagged and scored on Mass's sac fly to right. Buck Anderson doubled the Lions score in the fourth inning as he singled through the right side to drive in Nunez putting the Lions up 6-0.

Saint Leo loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and Luis Rivero entered as a pinch hitter and collected his first collegiate hit and RBI in his first collegiate at-bat. Mass sent a high fly ball into the night sky that was called an infield fly but an alert Miles on third tagged and scored the eighth Saint Leo run.

AUM got on the board in the eight inning, putting runners in scoring position and both runners came around to score on back-to-back ground outs.

Saint Leo's Kaelan Racculia and Judd Hildreth combined for three innings of no-hit ball while allowing just two runs on three strikeouts and one walk.

Saint Leo and AUM will close out it's three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
