#20 Softball Cruises to Doubleheader Sweep of Bridgeport

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The 20th-ranked Saint Leo University softball team saw its win streak extend to nine games with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Bridgeport on Tuesday night. The Lions rallied for an extra inning 2-1 win in 10 innings in game one and cruised to an 8-4 win in game two.

Madyson Coe had the best showing at the plate for the Lions on the day as she went five-for-eight with three RBI, a run scored, a walk, and a double. Coe provided the Lions with a chance to win the first game as she advanced the runner to third with no outs in the bottom of the tenth. In the circle, Haleigh Thomas was lights out as she scattered three hits across eight innings of relief work while striking out a career-high 17 batters and walking none, she also gave her the win by scoring on a passed ball in the bottom of the tenth.

Hope Epps and Alexis Barber both recorded four hits on the day as each tallied an RBI. Jayla Brooks had three hits across the two games.

#20 Saint Leo 2, Bridgeport 1 (10 innings)
  • Kayla Swinson opened the game for the Lions as she allowed just one run on three hits while stranding three runners.
  • Thomas entered the circle for the Lions in the third inning and pitched a shutout across the final eight innings while allowing just three hits and striking our 17 batters. Thomas struck out five straight batters across the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
  • Saint Leo had its first scoring threat of the game in the second inning putting runners on second and third with two out but were unable to capitalize.
  • In the seventh inning, the Lions were down to their final out as Coe came to the plate with pinch runner Morgan Shannon on second. Coe sent a base hit through the right side of the infield that allowed Shannon to come around and score the game-tying run.
  • The Lions made quick work of the bottom of the tenth as Thomas was placed on second to start the inning. She advanced to third as Coe grounded out to second and then on the next pitch Thomas raced home on a wild pitch scoring the winning run and giving her her second win of the season.
#20 Saint Leo 8, Bridgeport 4
  • Bridgeport got off to a hot start in the top of the first as three of the first four batters reached base to open the game. Angela Oros hit an RBI double to score the opening run of the game.
  • The Lions entire lineup came to the plate in the bottom of the first as they put five runs across the plate to take a 5-1 lead.
  • Coe sent a double to left scoring Thomas to tie the game at 1-1. Briana Neal reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop allowing Coe to score the go-ahead run. Neal followed with a steal of second base and as the throw was unsuccessfully attempted to get Neal out, Shannon took off for home and put the home team up 3-1. Back-to-back hits by Jayla Brooks and Epps added a pair of runs, putting the Lions up 5-1.
  • Bridgeport responded with two runs in the second inning to cut into the Lions lead.
  • After the top of the second, the pitching settled in as zeroes were put on the scoreboard from the bottom of the second to the middle of the sixth.
