WINTER PARK, Fla. – The 21st-ranked Saint Leo softball team jumped out to a three-run first inning and never looked back. The Lions opened Sunshine State Conference play with an 11-3 throttling of the Rollins College Tars on Thursday evening. The Lions and Tars had their three-game series moved up a day due to potential weather in the Winter Park area this weekend.
Morgan Shannon improved to 3-0 on the season as she pitched five scoreless innings in relief allowing just one Tars hit while walking two and striking out five including two of the looking variety to open the bottom of the seventh.
Three Lions had a multi-hit game combining for six of the eight Saint Leo hits.
Hailey Beuerlein,
Haleigh Thomas, and
Briana Neal all recorded two hits on the night.
Alexis Barber scored three runs while
Madyson Coe, Beuerlein, and Neal all had two RBI in the victory.
Five of the Lions eight hits were for extra bases, all five were doubles.
#21 Saint Leo 11, Rollins 3
- Saint Leo loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first. The Tars gave the Lions two free base runners to open the game as Barber was hit by a pitch and Alyssa Perez drew a walk, followed by Coe reaching on a fielder's choice. Saint Leo took a 2-0 lead as Beuerlein's base hit through the right side drove in Barber and Perez scored as Jayla Brooks reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. Thomas drew a one-out bases loaded walk to put the Lions up 3-0 on the first.
- After the Tars got on the board in the bottom half of the first, Saint Leo got the run back in the top of the third on an RBI double off the bat of Neal.
- Rollins final runs of the night came off a two-run shot to left that prompted a pitching change by the Lions.
- Saint Leo went on to score seven runs over the final four innings with three runs coming with two outs and two other runs coming with no outs.
- The Lions scored a pair of runs on back-to-back batters as Beuerlein had an RBI base hit up the middle and Jayla Brooks reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, similar to the first inning.
- Thomas opened the top of the fifth with a double to right chasing the Tars opening pitcher from the circle. Neal greeted the new Tars pitcher with an RBI double through the right side scoring Thomas. Sydney Cline came on to pinch hit and drew a walk as Neal stole third. After reentering, Hope Epps stole second putting runners on second and third. Neal came around to score on a fielder's choice to shortstop as Epps was out in a run down.
- The Lions put the game away in the seventh as Epps had an RBI and later came around to score on Coe's two-RBI double to right center.
- Shannon put the Tars away in the seventh striking out the side while stranding a runner on second.
