ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Graduate Student pitcher
Kayla Betts tossed her fifth career no-hitter in the second game of the final day of the Old Coast Classic hosted by Flagler College in St. Augustine. The 18th-ranked Saint Leo University softball team earned a split on the second day of the Old Coast Classic after dropping a 5-3 contest to #17 Wingate in the first game. The Lions made history for the first time this season as Betts held Converse hitless in the Lions 8-0 victory in six innings.
Saint Leo improved to 5-3 on the season with the split.
Betts walked one and hit one in a six-inning no-hitter against Converse while striking out 11 batters.
Alexis Barber led the Lions hitting going a combined five-for-seven with three RBI.
#17 Wingate 5, #18 Saint Leo 3
- The Bulldogs got on the board early with a two-run shot to left in the first inning.
- Haleigh Thomas got one back for the Lions as she plated Hope Epps with an RBI base hit to left in the fourth inning.
- Wingate responded an inning later with two runs to take a 4-1 lead on a double and a fly out.
- An RBI base hit in the bottom of the sixth gave the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead.
- Just like they did the night before, the Lions battled to plate a couple runs as they tried to mount a a late comeback. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Hailey Beuerlein sent a two-RBI double to right that scored Nia DeBenedittis and Grace Dunsworth to pull the Lions within two. The Bulldogs held on for the win striking out the final batter.
#18 Saint Leo 8, Converse 0 (6 innings)
- Kayla Betts had herself a day as she faced 20 batters and allowed just two base runners in six innings of hitless softball on Saturday. Betts hit a batter in the second and walked a batter in the fifth as the only base runners.
- The Lions hitters helped out their pitcher, plating eight runs across six innings.
- Saint Leo got on the board early as Barber's RBI base hit scored Caroline Barwick in the second inning. Barber went three-for-four in the game with three RBI as she also had a two-RBI double in the fifth for the Lions.
- The designated home team scored three runs in the third and three runs in the fifth and a final run in the sixth to complete the run-rule victory.
- The Green and Gold walked off the game as Briana Neal drew a bases loaded walk.
Saint Leo heads to Rollins next weekend to open Sunshine State Conference play. The Lions and the Tars are scheduled to play a single game on Friday night and a doubleheader on Saturday. Saint Leo will host Palm Beach Atlantic (Feb. 23-24) for its home opener in the final weekend of February.
