SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Flagler College on Saturday. The Lions opened the day with a 5-0 shutout of the Saints in game one. The Green and Gold used a three-run sixth inning to secure the final victory. The Lions improved to 5-1 on the season.
Game 1: Saint Leo 5, Flagler 0
Luke Lashutka continued his dominance on the mound as he threw eight innings of scoreless ball allowing six hits while striking out three and walking one.
Luke Pappas pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth to close out the 5-0 victory for the Lions.
A two-run third and a three-run fourth was all the scoring in the game.
Zach Benson put the eventual game winning run across the plate as
Caleb Adams scored on the ground out.
Mikey Scott gave the Lions an insurance run with a base hit up the middle scoring
Dylan Mass for a 2-0 Saint Leo lead.
Yazael Nunez plated
Josh Davis on a base hit to right making it a 3-0 Lions advantage in the fourth. The scoring didn't end there for the Lions as two batters later, Benson added two more with a two-RBI base hit up the middle.
Flagler threatened in the fifth putting runners on second and third with one out but Lashutka induced an infield pop out and ground out to strand the runners.
Game 2: Saint Leo 4, Flagler 2
Sam Cole pitched a career-high eight innings as he allowed a pair of runs on 10 hits while striking out six and walking none.
The home team got on the board first as the lead off batter, Trey Newland scored on a balk.
The Saints starter took a perfect game into the fourth inning before an error by the shortstop gave the Lions their first base runner. Flagler got out of the inning on an inning ending double play.
Giuseppe Arcuri recorded the first Lions hit of the game with a base hit through the left side.
Four straight batters reached in the sixth inning for the Lions, all with two outs. Saint Leo got on the board as the Lions capitalized on the Saints error.
Luke Houin followed with a base hit to right center scoring a pair of runs giving the visiting team its first lead of the game, 3-1.
Flagler responded in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out RBI double pulling the home team within one.
Saint Leo added a fourth run in the top of the eighth as Houin scored on a ground out.
The Saints threatened again in the bottom of the eight putting runners on second and third with two outs but the Lions got a ground out to third to end the inning.
Nick Jennings entered in the bottom of the ninth and allowed a lead off base hit. The senior pitcher proceeded close out the game sending down the next three hitters with a fly out to left and a pair of strikeouts.
