SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team lost, 1-0, at home against Nova Southeastern in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) play on Saturday night.
The Sharks were in their attacking zone and applied pressure to the Lions' defense with a trio of corner kicks in a four-minute span during the first half. In the 17th minute, Nova Southeastern found the net on a double assist goal from a free kick opportunity, 1-0. Senior
Edoardo Degl'Innocenti registered the first two shot attempts for Saint Leo with both going high of the net. In the closing minutes of the opening half, the Sharks recorded a corner kick followed by junior
Feres Sahid launching a shot that was wide left. At halftime, Nova Southeastern maintained its 1-0 advantage.
The Sharks notched an on-goal shot attempt that was saved by freshman goalkeeper
James Knudson in the 49th minute. Nova Southeastern maintained possession in its attacking zone with three shots in a three-minute span from the 69th minute to the 71st. Saint Leo's offense kicked into gear as freshman
Virgilio Escala blasted a shot that was saved in the 78th minute. Junior
Anel Rojas attempted a pair of headers in the last minutes off of passes from Degl'Innocenti, however, both just missed to score.
The Sharks out shot the Lions 13-8 while Nova Southeastern held the edge in shots on goal, 6-2. The Sharks collected the slight lead in corner kicks, 10-9.
Knudson recorded five saves in the net during the complete-game effort.
The Green and Gold return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 9 as they host Eckerd in a conference bout, starting at 7 p.m.
