Lions Come Up Short Against the Spartans, Falling 71-56 at Home

Saint Leo, Fla - Saint Leo Lions Women's Basketball team faced off against the Tampa Spartans, but unfortunately fell short with a final score of 71-56. The I-75 Rivalry brought intense moments, exciting plays, and a relentless effort from both sides.
 
The first quarter saw a tough defensive struggle, with both teams fighting for every point. Zoe Piller of Tampa led the way with 7 points. Saint Leo, however, faced challenges in finding the basket, shooting 26% from the field in the opening period.
 
As the game progressed, the Lions picked up their offensive rhythm in the second quarter. Taydra Simpson led the charge, while Chynna Mattair added 12 crucial points. Despite the improved offensive performance, Tampa maintained control, heading into halftime with a 35-20 lead.
 
The third quarter witnessed a spirited comeback effort from the Lions. Simpson continued to shine, scoring a team-high 15 points, including three three-pointers. The Lions outscored Tampa in the third, narrowing the deficit to 56-44.
 
However, the final quarter proved challenging for Saint Leo as they struggled to convert shots. Tampa's defense held firm, securing their lead, and ultimately sealing the victory. The final score stood at Tampa 71, Saint Leo 56.


 
Despite the outcome, several Lions stood out individually. Taydra Simpson's impressive performance included 15 points and two rebounds, while Chynna Mattair contributed 12 points. Andjela Pavicevic and Alanis Diaz provided a major spark for the Lions off the bench.  
 
The Lions will take away lessons from this match and look to bounce back in their upcoming game as they travel south to take on Barry Saturday February 3rd. The Lions look to bounce back and get a much-needed win on the road. Tip off will start at 2:00 p.m.
