Lions Battle Tough Against SSC Rival Florida Tech, Settles For A 1-1 Draw

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team had to settle for a draw versus SSC foe, The Florida Tech Panthers on Saturday at the Saint Leo Soccer Field. Lions move to (2-3-3) on the season.

Sophomore Anel Rojas and Senior Federico Tellechea wasted no time getting things started against the Panthers. They each were very active in the first half of the game. Rojas has three shots, followed by Tellechea with two.

Graduate Forward Federico Brusaca found the back of the net with a beautiful goal in the top left corner off the assist from Junior Midfielder Edoardo Degl'Innocenti.

Each squad got off six shots in the first half, which was a defensive battle early on. Both goalies saw very little action with just three saves total in the first half.

This was a very physical game early with a combined nine cards given out in the first half. Graduate Forward Federico Brusaca received a red card with eight minutes remaining in the half, which left the Lions at a disadvantage down a man.

The second half started a little slow but picked up with Florida Tech making efforts to apply pressure to even the score.

Florida Tech was granted a penalty kick in the 67th minute after Sophomore Forward Samuele Selva received a straight red card. The Panthers were then able to capitalize with the PK kick from Fabio Amaral to tie up the match.

The Green and Gold were facing an uphill battle being down two men for the last 23 minutes of the match. Nonetheless, The Lions were able to fight off the Panthers and settle for the 1-1 draw against the #4 team in the country.

The Lions return home for an out-of-conference matchup next Wednesday, Sep. 27 at 7:00 p.m. versus Johnson University - Florida at the Saint Leo Soccer Field.
