Singles Sweep Fuels Dominant 6-1 Win over #13 Wayne State

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The #2 Saint Leo University Men's tennis quickly proved why the team was deserving of its new ranking Saturday, defeating #13 Wayne State 6-1 at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
 
The Doubles matches featured elite competition, as #28 Vincent Thiel / Ghali Mensour took on #5 Cedric Drenth / Daniel Grey.  Thiel and Mensour nearly pulled off the upset, falling in a 7-6 (4) tiebreaker.
 
Juniors Ivan Marrero and Luis Iriarte fell 7-5 to the duo of Luke Laws and Dom Spicer before the Tao Bernal Castillo and Nicolas Bacella pair bested Denali Kitayama and Joe Kelt 6-4.
 
WSU, winning two of the three Doubles matches, earned the first point.
 
For the fourth time this season, the Lions (11-0) swept the Singles matches.  #15 nationally-ranked Marrero blew out #25 nationally-ranked Drenth 6-1, 6-0.  #27 nationally-ranked Fifth-year Martin Soukal defeated Grey 6-3, 6-2.  #22 Thiel defeated #21 Spicer 6-2, 6-2 before Bacella bested Niklas Karcz 6-4, 6-3.
 
Mensour received the victory for Saint Leo at the No. 5 spot against Laws with 6-3, 7-5 wins in straight sets before Iriarte finished the sweep with 6-1, 6-2 set wins over Kelt.

The Green & Gold have a quick turnaround time to return to the court, facing #18 University of West Florida Sunday with the first serve set in Valdosta, Ga. at Noon.
