Box Score KEARNEY, Neb. – The #3 Saint Leo University Women's tennis team saw its magical run in the ITA National Indoor Championship come to an end late Sunday, as first-seeded #1 Barry blanked the Lions 4-0 to claim the 2023 national title at Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.
The Buccaneers swept the Lions in the Doubles matches, as Sophomores
Claudia Borbon Roca and
Jade Bellegy were bested by Xiyao Wang and Selena Pichler 6-1 before Deniz Khazan and Daniela Farfan defeated Sixth-year
Marta Vicens Miquel and Junior Lavinia Lancelotti 6-2 to give Barry the first point of the match.
In the Singles matches, each of the six contests were balanced with a favorite to win its respective match, but Barry's women's tennis team got the necessary points in three matchups in a 76-minute span to win the overall match. In the three unfinished matches, Saint Leo had the lead in two of them, as Sophomore
Luzia Obermeier and Junior
Celina Ermann were ahead of their respective opponents.
"Tough match today for the Lions" said Head Coach
Chad Berryhill. "I felt like we never got settled in and it showed. Barry played a very good match and certainly deserved to win the title today. We will however be back stronger! It was a great weekend for our team and we learned a lot. Proud of our efforts and for them to have the opportunity to play for a National Title. They will remember this and grow from this experience."
Saint Leo is back in action March 4th, as the team travels to Valdosta, Ga. to face Auburn Montgomery in a neutral site contest. First serve is slated for 3 p.m.
