SAINT LEO, Fla. – Fifth-year forward
Marty Jackson and guard
Kanon Koster were honored for their recent accomplishments before the game Wednesday night, as Jackson reached 2,000 career points and Koster 1,000 points. The Saint Leo University Men's basketball team defeated Florida Southern 93-76 at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
Wednesday marked the first time since 2015-16 that the Lions (21-9, 12-7 SSC) swept the Mocs (18-8, 12-7 SSC) outside of a modified COVID season. The Lions' win also clinches a home quarterfinal game for the upcoming Sunshine State Conference Championship.
It was only fitting that the honored recipients would be the players to post more monster performances, as Jackson tallied 28 on the night while Koster recorded back-to-back 30+ point games and grabbed nine boards.
Saint Leo made all as a whole shot over 54% from the field while knocking down 44.4% of shots from long range. From the charity stripe, the Lions went 15-for-25 (60%).
Once again, Saint Leo's perimeter defense stifled Florida Southern's deep attack, limiting the Red & Blue to 14.3% and 34.3% overall.
The Green & Gold wasted no time in establishing a hold on the contest, jumping out to a 12-0 lead before the Mocs worked its way back into the contest and ultimately grab its first lead (21-20) at the 8:15 mark. The Lions' deficit would last for only a minute, as a layup from Junior
Jared Coomer gave the lead back to Saint Leo for good.
After FSC's Jadin Booth's free throws cut the Mocs' deficit to two (34-32), the Lions finished the first half with a buzzer-beating tip-in from Koster that gave the Green & Gold a 36-32 halftime lead.
The second half saw the Lions' scoring attack take full effect, scoring 57 points and shooting 20-of-30. Saint Leo would post a lead as large as 22 before ultimately coming away with the 93-76 win.
Saint Leo closes out the regular season Saturday with a home contest against Eckerd; tipoff at the Marion Bowman Activities Center is set for 6 p.m.
