JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Saint Leo University Women's soccer team's first road game of the season was a business trip that quickly became a goal-scoring fiesta Thursday evening, as the Lions defeated Edward Waters College in a 6-0 blowout win at Nathaniel Glover Community Field.
Saint Leo (4-0-1) posted 28 total shots on the day, the most since Head Coach
Ged O'Connor returned to take the helm. Senior Goalkeeper
Maitane Bravo saw the first half of playing time, making three saves before Sophomore Goalkeeper Amit Beilin took over to tend the twine in the second half.
The Green & Gold struck first in the 15th minute, as Freshman Midfielder
Katja May recorded her first intercollegiate goal courtesy of a setup from Graduate Forward
Caitlin Strong. The Halifax, England native would return the favor 90 seconds later, setting up Strong to extend the Lions' lead 2-0.
While Edward Waters (1-3) held off the Lions' attack for the rest of the first half, Saint Leo could not be stopped in Half Two, outshooting the Tigers 17-3.
Right out of intermission, Senior Midfielder
Nina Mueller found a wide open player in Senior Forward
Alexia Spencer who took it the distance, drawing the backline and the Tigers keeper before crossing to Graduate Midfielder
Larissa Weber, who slotted the shot dead center of the net as the former Keiser Seahawk pushed the Lions' lead to three goals.
Spencer herself would find her own opportunities to capitalize, scoring twice in a three-minute span that gave Saint Leo a 5-0 lead.
May would conclude the Green & Gold scoring in the 81st minute, bending the shot around the keeper to complete the Lions' 6-0 rout of the Tigers.
