ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Saint Leo women's soccer battled until the final minutes but came up short in a 2-1 loss to Eckerd in the opening round of the SSC tournament at Johnson Field. The Lions found the back of the net late and finished with a strong defensive effort in the second half, limiting the Tritons to four shots after the break.
Eckerd who is ranked first in the SSC tournament, and also receiving votes in the national coaches poll opened the scoring in the 21st minute on an unassisted goal by Jasmine Gallo. Freija Aflenzer extended the Tritons' lead to 2-0 in the 56th minute, with Helen Scheer providing the assist.
Saint Leo continued to push offensively and broke through in the 90th minute when Payton Todd scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Katherine Neves, but unfortunately it was too late in the match to help the Lions advance to the next round. Goalkeeper Addison Pitts kept Saint Leo within reach with seven saves, including five in the first half, as the Lions held Eckerd scoreless over the final 34 minutes.
