Saint Leo Survives Sailfish for First SSC Win

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Saint Leo University Women's soccer team's attack provided a trio of goals in its Sunshine State Conference season opener, but the Lions managed to hold off a scare from Palm Beach Atlantic in the final minutes to take a 3-2 win over the Sailfish Saturday night at the PBA Soccer/Lacrosse Field.

For the fourth time in 2022, Saint Leo (5-0-1, 1-0 SSC) recorded multiple goals in a match, despite the Sailfish (1-4-1, 0-1 SSC) outshooting the Lions 12-10.  Senior Goalkeeper Maitane Bravo notched three saves.

The first half saw one score, as Senior Forward Alex Collighan delivered the finishing strike from touches by Seniors Alexia Spencer and Taylor Smith in the 26th minute that gave the Lions a 1-0 lead.

Saint Leo extended its lead 2-0 in the 65th minute when Sophomore Midfielder Alicia Hiis punched in her first score wearing Green & Gold.  Moments later, the Lions capitalized on a penalty kick from Senior Midfielder Nina Mueller to extend the lead to three.

Even with the contest at hand, PBA would not go down without a fight, breaking the shutout in the 87th minute before posting its second goal with just seconds remaining as time ran out for the Sailfish, preserving the Green & Gold's 3-2 win.
