MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Saint Leo University volleyball team continued to fight throughout the match, keeping every set close, but the overall play of #16 Barry was too much for the Lions to handle as the Buccaneers swept the Green & Gold Saturday evening at the Health & Sports Center.
Junior
Kennedy DeLuca led the Lions (5-9, 1-5 SSC) in kills in the match with 10, boasting a .667 hitting percentage. Junior
Margaret Schirm notched two blocks and six kills with a .429 hitting percentage.
The Lions controlled the lead early in the first set before Barry took its first lead at 9-8. After both sides exchanged points to tie the frame at 10 apiece, the Bucs took the lead for good, fueled by a five-point run that led to a 25-17 opening set win.
The second set was tightly contested, as the lead was no more than four points in a frame that saw the score tied 10 times. The Green & Gold got the score to as close as one point (20-19) before the Bucs finished the set on a 5-2 run to win the frame 25-21.
Set Three saw Saint Leo hold the lead for the majority of time, going as far as the set point up 24-23 before Barry finished off the Lions with a 4-1 run that won the Bucs a 27-25 set and sweep over the Green & Gold.
Saint Leo now regroups before travelling towards Southeast Florida Friday to Boca Raton to face Lynn. First serve against the Knights is scheduled for 7 p.m.
