Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Ends Season With Momentum

SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball, ranked third in the NCAA South Region, took game two of their doubleheader with Eckerd, 9-2 on Saturday evening to finish the regular season with 35 wins.

The Lions scored first in the bottom of the third inning on a Sam Crail home run to deep center, his fifth of the season, to go up 1-0 on the Tritons. Eckerd would get that run back in the top of the fourth on a RBI double to center.

But then Saint Leo exploded for a six-run bottom of the fourth inning. Peyton Meredith got it started when he brought in Yazael Nunez to give Saint Leo the lead back at 2-1. After Giusepe Arcuri doubled to left to put runners on second and third, the Lions got huge back-to-back triples to break the lead open. First it was Buck Anderson who drove one deep off the wall in right center that cleared the bases and made it 4-1 Lions. Then Tyler Trovinger followed suit with a RBI triple of his own off the centerfield wall, giving the Lions a 5-1 lead. Trovinger then scored on a RBI groundout from Sam Crail. The scoring in the inning was concluded with a Bobby Sparling home run to right, his 21st of the season.

Dariel Fregio had another stellar outing on the mound for Saint Leo. He went 7.1 innings, giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out six and walking three, picking up his eighth win in the process.

Saint Leo finishes the regular season with a 35-15 record and a 20-10 record in the Sunshine State Conference. This is the second best regular season record under Head Coach Rick O'Dette since the 2018 season when the Lions finished 38-11 and 21-9 in the SSC. The Lions have now won eight of their last nine games and have won their last six series versus conference opponents. They will now wait until Sunday, May 15 when the NCAA will host their NCAA Division II Baseball Selection Show to learn where they will be positioned in the South Regional for the 2022 Division II Baseball Championship.
