SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball fought until the end and squeaked out a huge win over Eckerd in game one of their Senior Day on Saturday, 7-6, at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
The Lions got behind early in the ballgame, trailing 1-0 after the first inning. That lead didn't last very long, however, when
Giuseppe Arcuri hammered his second home run of the season over the wall in left to tie the ballgame at 1-1.
In the fourth inning, the Tritons executed aggressive base-running to take the lead back, scoring two runs on a sac-fly to center to go up 3-1 on the Lions. But it was a back-and-forth game all day long fighting for momentum. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth,
Sam Crail drove home RBI's number 39 and 40 to tie the game at 3-3 on a RBI double to left that scored
Tyler Trovinger and
Mike Wyman.
Saint Leo's rally finally came through in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single off the bat of Arcuri. With two outs,
Yazael Nunez singled to center to put the tying run on base. He then moved to third on a single from
Mike Wyman and a throwing error on the centerfielder. The error cost the Tritons in the next at bat when Arcuri singled Nunez home to put the Lions on top, 4-3. The Lions then struck for two more in the seventh when they loaded the bases and
Adrien Roa brought Crail and
Bobby Sparling home on a RBI single to center, giving the Green and Gold a 6-3 lead.
After Eckerd came back in eight and ninth innings to force extras,
Mike Wyman hit a deep sac-fly to left with the winning run on third that scored
Zach Benson, winning the ballgame for the Lions in ten innings.
Saint Leo is now 34-15 on the season and 19-10 in the Sunshine State Conference.
