Lions Fall On Friday Night To Eckerd

SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball suffered a tough loss at the hands of Eckerd on Friday night, 8-6, at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.

Most of the damage was done in the first inning by the Tritons, putting up a five spot early in the ballgame. After getting two on with one out, the Tritons managed to score four runs in the next four at bats via three RBI singles and a sac-fly out. They then struck with a two-out RBI single to take a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the first.

After that inning, the Lions attempted to crawl their way back in and they did just that. In the bottom of the first, Tyler Trovinger got a run back with a RBI single that scored Buck Anderson. After the Tritons scored again in the top of the third, the Lions came back with four in the next two innings. Eddie Niemann had a two-out RBI single in the third that brought home Sam Crail and cut the score to 6-2. Then in the fourth, the Lions pulled to within one. Two consecutive sac-flyouts to right brought home two runs, and then a Bobby Sparling RBI double to center made the lead 6-5 for Eckerd.

Saint Leo got another run closer in the bottom of the ninth on a sac-fly from Sam Crail, but that was all the Lions would be able to put together. Saint Leo left seven runners on the baes paths compared to 11 for the Tritons. All together, both teams had 29 hits on the night. Eckerd snaps the Lions' six-game win streak and takes game one of the series. The Lions fall to 33-14 on the season and 18-10 in the conference. The Lions and Tritons will be back in action for a doubleheader at Thomas B. Southard Stadium on Saturday when Saint Leo celebrates their Senior Day before the game.
