WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball swept the doubleheader at Palm Beach Atlantic on Sunday behind a 10-2 win in game one and an 8-2 win in game two.Â
GAME ONE:
In game one, the Lions struck first in the first inning via an error by the Sailfish that allowedÂ
Tyler Trovinger to score the first run, and then Eddie Niemann singled to left to give Saint Leo a 2-0 lead after one.Â
Then in the fourth inning, the Lions got three more runs to go up 5-0.
Mike Wyman roped a double to left that scored Eddie Niemann, and then Trovinger got a two-run single to left to give the Lions a five-run lead.Â
After a three-run home run from
Giuseppe Arcuri in the fifth, tacked on two more in the seventh from
Mike Wyman and
Tyler Trovinger's RBI singles to make it 10-0 Saint Leo.Â
Jared Beck got the one-inning start for the Lions and earned the win with a three-up, three-down first inning.
Luke Lashutka threw six tough innings for the Lions, giving up two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.Â
GAME TWO:
The Lions in game two once again took the lead in the first inning on a RBI groundout from
Sam Crail. Then after Palm Beach Atlantic got that run back in the bottom of the first,
Giuseppe Arcuri brought home the lead run on a RBI groundout to take a 2-1 lead.Â
In the bottom of the sixth, the Sailfish tied the game up at 2-2. But the seventh and eighth innings were huge for the Lions.
Peyton Meredith scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to give Saint Leo the lead back. And in the eighth the Lions put up a five-spot to put the nail in the coffin. Meredith singled home Roa to give the Lions a two-run lead, 4-2. The Lions then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases and bring in another run to take a 5-2 lead. Then Trovinger brought home his fourth RBI of the day on an infield, pop-up single, making it 6-2 Saint Leo.
Sam Crail made it 8-2 Lions with a two-run single to left, his fourth hit of the doubleheader.Â
Dariel Fregio had another phenomenal start for the Lions going 6.1 innings of work with four strikeouts, no walks, and giving up two runs on seven hits. He earned his seventh win in the process. He's now second in the SSC in wins.Â
SSC LEADERS FOR THE LIONS
Going into the final week of the regular season with Saint Leo ranked third in the South Region,
Andy Booth is ranked fifth in the conference in earned run average with a 2.03 ERA, and fourth in hits allowed. Fregio is tenth in innings pitched and second in wins.
Jared Beck is ranked second in strikeouts with 92.
Jestin Jones is ranked sixth in saves with eight.Â
Offensively,
Bobby Sparling leads the conference in slugging percentage (.747), home runs (20), and RBI's (59). He's also fourth in runs scored (44) and fifth in hits (65).
Sam Crail is third in triples with five.
Tyler Trovinger has also drawn the third most walks with 31.Â
Saint Leo is now 33-14 on the season and 18-9 in the SSC going into the final regular season series of the year next Friday and Saturday at Eckerd.Â
