MELBOURNE, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball dropped a tough game on Saturday evening to Florida Tech, 9-7, in game two of a doubleheader with the Panthers.
Florida Tech jumped out to a big 6-0 lead after five innings. They struck early and often with a RBI double and single in the first inning and a RBI triple and single in the fifth inning.
But slowly, the Lions got themselves back in the game.
Adrien Roa got it started with his second home run of the day, a solo home run that led off the sixth inning. Then later in the sixth, with two out and the bases loaded,
Buck Anderson grounded into a RBI that cut the lead to four, 6-2.
Tyler Trovinger followed that with a RBI double to right center and brought home two runs that made it 6-4 Florida Tech.
The Panthers would get a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but the Lions stormed back in the top of the eighth with three runs to tie the ballgame. With no one out, the Lions loaded the bases and allowed Anderson to deliver again with a RBI groundout to bring the Lions to within two runs, 7-5. Trovinger again followed Buck with a RBI single to left and pulled Saint Leo to within a run, 7-6. Saint Leo finally tied the game on a throwing error off the bat of Roa, allowing Trovinger to come home and score and tie the game at 7-7.
Florida Tech would fight back in the bottom of the eighth, however, and take the lead for good, 9-7. Trovinger finished the day with a game-high three RBI's on two hits with a run scored to lead the way for Saint Leo.
Saint Leo falls to 26-13 on the year and 12-9 in the conference before welcoming Florida Tech for a rematch on Tuesday night at Thomas B. Southard Stadium in what will be a non-conference meeting.
