Lions Take Down Sailfish Behind Strong Pitching Performance

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball, ranked third in the NCAA South Region, took down Palm Beach Atlantic in game one of the series on Satuday afternoon, 3-2, behind a combined pitching performance from Brayden Heidel and Andy Booth.

Heidel got the start for the Lions and went three innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out four. He ran into trouble twice but not a lot of damage was done. A run scored on an error and a run on a fielder's choice was all the Sailfish could get past Heidel. Saint Leo's defense provided a lot of support the rest of the way.

Andy Booth came on in relief after the third inning and earned the win to move to 5-0 on the season. He shutdown the Sailfish allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out six batters. He got eight to flyout and four to groundout.

Saint Leo got on the board first in the third inning. With a runner on first and two out, Bobby Sparling shot a double to right center to score Sam Crail and put the Lions on top 1-0. In the fifth inning, the Lions took advantage of a couple of errors from Palm Beach Atlantic. Buck Anderson singled, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout. With Crail at the plate, he scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2. Saint Leo then took the lead for good in the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Adrien Roa hit a sac fly to right and brought home Anderson to give Saint Leo a 3-2 lead.

The Lions move to 31-14 on the season and 16-9 in the conference before taking on the Sailfish in game two of the doubleheader.
