Heidel's Strong Start, Buck's Homer Propel Lions Over Eagles

SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball came back and won their series opener with Embry-Riddle on Friday night, 6-4, over the Eagles at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.

Brayden Heidel got the start against Embry-Riddle and was solid through five innings of work, keeping the Eagles off the board for the first half of the ballgame. He gave up just two hits and one walk in the first five innings, preventing any threat the Eagles could start.

The trouble for the Lions came in the sixth inning when the Eagles loaded the bases and then struck with a two-run single to give Embry-Riddle a 2-1 lead. They then made it 3-1 with no outs to secure the momentum of the game.

But Saint Leo, as they have done all season long, weren't out of it. With two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh, Buck Anderson drove a pitch to deep right for his fourth home run of the season, tying the game at 4-4. The three-run shot gave Anderson 31 RBI's on the season, good for third on the team.

Then in the bottom of the eighth, a couple errors by the Eagles put the lead run on third for the Lions in Bobby Sparling. With two outs, Yazael Nunez drove in his 31st RBI of the season to put Saint Leo on top, 5-4. For added insurance, Mike Wyman drove Nunez in with a RBI double, giving the Lions a 6-4 lead.

Jestin Jones came on in the top of the ninth and closed it out for Saint Leo with his seventh save of the season. The Lions now move to 28-14 on the year and 13-9 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Lions and Eagles will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
