Lions Use Six-Run Fifth To Top Eagles

SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball continued their win streak on Tuesday night to take down Minnesota Crookston, 11-6, and have now won six games in a row.

The Lions used a six-run fifth inning to their advantage to break their lead open. After a Buck Anderson single and Sam Crail double, Bobby Sparling hit a hard grounder to third that was misplayed by the infielder, moving to second and scoring both Anderson and Crail. Paul Coumoulos then picked up his sixth RBI of the year on a RBI single that scored Sparling, making it 4-3 Saint Leo.

Tyler Trovinger continued the inning with his fifth RBI of the season on a single to left scoring Adrien Roa, making it 5-3 Lions. Minnesota Crookston committed another error in the inning on the infield with two runners on after an Eddie Niemann hard ground ball, allowing both runners to score and give the Lions a four-run lead.

The Eagles cut into the deficit in the top of the eighth when they scored three runs to drop the Lions' lead to 7-6. But the Green and Gold responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half. Crail hit his third triple of the year and 17th RBI when he brought home Buck Anderson from first on an one-out three bagger. Bobby Sparling recorded his tenth home run of the season with a two-run bomb to left, giving the Lions a 10-6 advantage. Sparling leads all of the Sunshine State Conference with his double digit dingers.

Mike Wyman then hit a two-out solo home run to left for his second of the season, to secure the 11-6 win for Saint Leo.

Nick Jennings picked up his first win of the year going 1.2 innings of relief work, giving up just one run on one hit while striking out four and walking one. Drew Rudsinski shut down the Eagles in the final two innings, giving up just one hit and one walk.

The Lions moved to 13-7 on the season with their fifth win in a row, and will now look to make it six in a row when they close out the two-game series with Minnesota Crookston on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 6:00 at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
