MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Saint Leo Softball bounced back on Sunday to take down Barry, but were only able to take one game out of the doubleheader in Miami Shores, Florida.Â
In game one, the Lions got a strong start out of
Morgan Shannon, who threw six innings of tough softball while getting out of some tricky situations. Shannon gave up six hits and three runs, while striking out four and giving up just two walks. However, one pitch in the sixth inning made the difference in this ballgame. With two outs, the Buccaneers struck for back-to-back singles to set up a three-run home run to center and give Barry a 3-1 lead. The Lions were able to get out of the sixth with a two-run deficit, but were unable to comeback in the seventh.Â
The Lions' only run in the ballgame came in the top of the sixth, when
Isabella Andujar hit a hard groundball to short and reached on a throwing error, allowing
Jordyn Wolfe to come around from second and score to put Saint Leo on top.Â
In game two, the Lions bounced back and got another great performance from
Rachel Bean in the circle. Bean struck out a season-high seven batters while giving up just one run on four hits and walking two. The Buccaneers only run came in the fifth inning on a RBI single.Â
Bean got run support from her Lions' teammates in three straight innings from the fourth to the sixth. In the fourth, with
Jordyn Wolfe on second and two down, Andujar once again reached on a fielder error from Barry that allowed Wolfe to come around and score, giving Saint Leo a 1-0 lead. Then in the fifth,
Alexandra Hare was in scoring position on second after pinching running for
Kylie Liotine, and then moved over to third on a
Hope Epps single. Saint Leo then used their aggressive base running on a double steal with Hare stealing home and Epps taking second, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead.Â
After Barry cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fifth, the Lions got a run back in the sixth on a RBI groundout from Andujar that brought home
Alyssa Perez, giving Saint Leo a 3-1 lead for good.Â
After the doubleheader split, the Lions now stand at 17-4 on the season and 7-2 in the Sunshine State Conference. Saint Leo also stands atop the Sunshine State Conference in first place, right in front of Barry.Â
