SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball, looking to seek momentum going into the last week of March, got all of that and much more with a second straight win over NCBWA #9 Rollins on Sunday, 9-7, to take the season series.Â
The Lions got on the board first in the bottom of the third. After
Tyler Trovinger and
Yazael Nunez drew back-to-back leadoff walks to start the inning,
Zach Benson doubled both of them home with a two-run double to put Saint Leo up 2-0.Â
But then Rollins countered that with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth. After the leadoff guy drew a walk, the Tars tied the ballgame with a two-run home run to right. They then took the lead on a one-out solo shot to left, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Tars.Â
After a scoreless fifth, the Lions' bats got hot in the sixth, striking for four runs. With two on and one out,
Paul Coumoulos recorded his 11th RBI of the season on a single to left center that scored
Adrien Roa from second, tying the ballgame at 3-3. Then Eddie Niemann and Coumoulos advanced to second and third on a throwing error by the Tars' catcher. That allowed Trovinger, with the shift on the left side of the infield, to go opposite field with a single to right, scoring Niemann for his 11th RBI of the season and giving the Lions the lead at 4-3. They then extended that lead to three on a
Yazael Nunez double to left center that scored Trovinger and Coumoulos. It was Nunez seventh double of the season and 17th and 18th RBI's.Â
However, Rollins wasn't going away silently. The Tars pulled to within one in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run, and then took the lead on a RBI groundout and double in the top of the eighth.Â
But it was
Buck Anderson's time to be the hero. With two on and two out, Anderson, in the left-handed batters box, drilled his third home run of the season over the wall in right to put Saint Leo on top, 9-7, causing the home third base dugout to go absolutely crazy. The bomb lifted Anderson's RBI total on the season to 19.Â
Jestin Jones then came on in the top of the ninth and shut the Tars down to earn his fifth save of the season and close the win out for the Lions.Â
Saint Leo now moves to 21-10 on the season and 8-7 in the Sunshine State Conference before hosting Eckerd this coming Tuesday night for a non-conference meeting at 6:00.Â
