Softball Drops Twin Bill With Tampa

SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Softball came up on the wrong end of both games in Sunday's doubleheader with the NFCA #13 Tampa Spartans at University Softball Stadium.

In game one, the Lions and Spartans were in a tight pitchers duel through the first four innings despite Tampa striking for two runs in the second. Rachel Bean went the first four innings giving up just two runs on five hits to keep Saint Leo in the ballgame. However, in the fifth inning, a three-run home run propelled Tampa a 5-0 lead over the Lions to enlarge the margin.

Saint Leo failed to get a runner on for four straight innings, from the second to the fifth, making it difficult to narrow the lead of the Spartans. The Lions got two on with two out in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get them home to start a rally.

In game two, it was eerily the same story. Both starting pitchers were deadlocked in a duel through the first five innings, shutting out the opposing offense. Morgan Shannon went the first five innings shutting out the Spartans giving up just two hits and striking out four. However, in the top of the sixth inning, the Spartans got to Shannon for three runs to take a 3-0 lead that would hold the rest of the game.

Saint Leo did threaten a number of times. In the second inning, the Lions loaded the bases but failed to get a runner home. In the fourth and fifth innings, Saint Leo got runners in scoring position but were halted by Tampa pitching.

The Lions, after dropping both games, now stand at 18-8 on the season and 7-5 in the Sunshine State Conference heading into their series at Rollins beginning Friday.
