SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Softball dropped a heartbreaker to #13 Tampa on Saturday afternoon, 3-2, at University Softball Stadium.
The Lions, down 3-1 going into the seventh inning, mounted a comeback after
Emily Pilon hit her sixth home run of the season to deep left center that brought Saint Leo to within a run. Then
Hope Epps continued the rally with a single that was misplayed by the shortstop to bring the winning run to the plate. After the next two batters got out,
Bayley Williams beat out a sac bunt to the pitcher and moved Epps over to the second with two down. Tampa starter Corynn Miner, however, got out of the jam and secured the win for Tampa.
The Spartans had a tough start against Saint Leo's starter
Kayla Betts. Betts recorded the first eight batters out. But Tampa then got two on with one out in the fourth when they struck for a three-run home run to take a 3-1.
Betts went the distance, pitching seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits, striking out three and walking just two. She was handed her fourth loss of the season.
Saint Leo fell to 18-6 on the season and 7-3 in the SSC. The Lions and Spartans will be back in action for a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 1:00 from University Softball Stadium.
