TAMPA, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball went 1-1 on Saturday to split a doubleheader versus NCBWA #2 Tampa and to avoid being swept in the series with the Spartans.Â
In game one, the Spartans jumped out to a big lead early, scoring once in the first inning, three times in the second inning, and again in the third to take a 5-1 lead going into the fourth. However, Saint Leo kept their offense alive with a
Paul Coumoulos two-run home run with two out in the fourth inning to bring the Lions to within two runs, 5-3. It was second home run of the season and came at a crucial time.Â
Andy Booth came on in relief for the Lions kept the ballclub in the game, giving up just two runs on seven hits while striking out five, getting out of some big jams, and limiting the damage. Booth went 5.2 innings in relief.Â
Saint Leo fell in game one, 6-3, to drop to 17-9 on the season and 5-6 in SSC play.
In game two, the Lions and Spartans were stuck in a pitchers duel for the first six innings of the ballgame. Deadlocked at 1-1, Saint Leo's
Brayden Heidel and Tampa's Nick Long went back and forth limiting the offense from either team. Heidel went 4.1 innings in his seventh start of the season, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out three.Â
It wasn't until the eighth inning that the Lions finally got to the Spartans using the long ball. Down 3-1, it was
Bobby Sparling hitting his 14th home run of the year with a three-run to give the Lions a 4-3 lead going into the ninth. Sparling added to his RBI total to now lead the conference with 47 RBI's. And then
Buck Anderson belted his second home run of the season, another three-run home run to add onto Saint Leo's lead and ensure the Green and Gold's 7-3 win.
Jestin Jones came on in relief for the Lions and halted Tampa's offense, going 4.2 innings giving up just two runs on four hits while striking out four, earning his fourth win of the season.Â
Saint Leo now sits at 18-9 on the season and 6-6 in SSC play before welcoming Florida Southern for a non-SSC matchup on Tuesday night at 6:00 at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.Â
