SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Softball extended their win streak to twelve in a row with a second run-rule win over Tiffin on Tuesday night, sweeping the Dragons in a doubleheader.Â
The Lions got down 1-0 early on in the first inning to Tiffin, but came immediately right back with two runs in the bottom of the first. With
Jordyn Wolfe on third and
Alyssa Perez on second,
Emily Pilon grounded out to short on a ball that normally would bring home just one run, but Perez was right behind Wolfe to slide in and miss the tag to put Saint Leo ahead, 2-1, and give Pilon two RBI's on the play.Â
The Lions, going into the fourth inning ahead 3-1, then had a big four-run fourth inning. Back-to-back errors committed by Tiffin put
Alexandra Hare and
Hope Epps on base in scoring position to try and increase the Lions' lead. It was then
Jordyn Wolfe who did just that with a liner down the left field line that brought home both runners and allowed Wolfe to speed into third with a two-run triple, her second of the season and eighth and ninth RBI's on the campaign. Wolfe then came home to score on a Perez RBI double, her team-leading fourth of the year, giving the Lions a 6-1 lead. With
Caroline Barwick pinch running on first and Perez on second, the Lions used a double steal to bring Perez home and Barwick to record eighth stolen base of the season, which is second most on the team. Saint Leo took a 7-1 lead into the fifth inning.Â
Saint Leo used aggressive base-running in the fifth once again to secure the eight-run win.
Bayley Williams and
Hope Epps both drew walks and both tallied stolen bases to put runners on second and third with just one out. That allowed
Kayleice Hooks to capitalize on her big day with a two-run single into right to score Williams and Epps and clinch the win for the Lions.Â
Rachel Bean got the start for Saint Leo, and was dominant for five complete innings. Bean tossed five innings giving up just one run on a single hit, not giving up a walk, and striking out four. She secured her fifth win of the season, which is tied for third most in the conference alongside her teammate,
Kayla Betts. Bean sits at a perfect 5-0 record in her five starts going into a doubleheader with Kentucky Wesleyan on Wednesday.Â
The Lions will now take their winning streak into Wednesday's doubleheader with the Panthers from Kentucky Wesleyan. Game one of the doubleheader begins at 5:00 from University Softball Stadium.Â
