SAINT LEO, Fla. –
Bruno Faletto had a day against Valdosta State Tuesday afternoon inside the Saint Leo Tennis Center. The senior from Santiago, Chile blanked his first doubles opponents, 6-0, with partner
Willem Van Den Akker, and then went on to upset the 12
th highest singles player, Luca Mack, 6-2, 6-2, while being ranked 27
th in singles nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Faletto's big day gave way to a thrilling team upset as the No. 9 Saint Leo Lions took down the No. 2 Valdosta State Blazers, 5-2. The nationally ranked non-conference tilt raised the Green and Gold's record to 6-2 while the Blazers' season mark lowered to 2-3.
Once the first doubles duo of Faletto and Van Den Akker notched their win, the Lions earned the double point win with a victory in the third doubles duo.
Brad Eidenmuller and
Nicolas Bacella topped their opponents 6-4 for the team point.
No. 27 Faletto flexed on No.12 Luca Mack rolling to a 6-2, 6-2 in the first singles match. Van Den Akker also went on for a perfect day. The graduate student from Voorhour, Netherlands cruised to 6-3, 6-4 win in the sixth spot.
Up 3-0,
Vincent Thiel secured the upset in third singles. The freshman from Orleans, France came back in dramatic fashion to win in three-sets. Thiel fell 7-6 in set one, and answered in set two mirroring a 7-6 decision. With the match leveled 6-7, 7-6, he whipped up a 6-2 third set victory.
Nicolas Bacella went the distance for the final 5-2 score. The senior from Venado Tuerto, Argentina recorded a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 three set victory.
The Lions will look to carry the momentum into their next match on Friday, March 4. Saint Leo is set to host Auburn Montgomery starting at 3:00 p.m.
