GULF SHORES, Fla. - Saint Leo Softball came out victorious over Delta State in their first game on Sunday with a 9-0 win in five innings over the Statesmen in the Gulf Shores Invitational behind a strong start from sophomore right-hander
Morgan Shannon.
Shannon, with the help of the strong Saint Leo defense, breezed through the Delta State lineup, going five innings and striking out six. She gave up just two hits in leading to the complete game shutout.
The Lions jumped on Delta State quickly with a three-run first inning. They first took advantage of a wild pitch from Delta State's Olivia Burns that allowed
Jordyn Wolfe to come home and score from third and give the Lions a 1-0 lead. The wild pitch also allowed
Alyssa Perez to move down to third, setting up an
Emily Pilon sac-fly to center to make the score 2-0 in favor of the home team. Then the third run of the inning came on a wild sequence of events on the infield.
Alexandra Hare hit a sharp grounder to third, but the throw to first was offline allowing extra bases for the Lions, eventually leading to
Kendyl Crean to come home and score and make it 3-0 Saint Leo.
Saint Leo closed the door in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the game away with a four-run inning. Wolfe got it started with an RBI double to left center that brought home
Deanna Falciglia to make it 6-0 Lions. That was followed by a Perez RBI single to center allowing Wolfe to come around and score.
Isabella Andujar joined the fun with an RBI liner to right that brought home Perez from third.
Ciara Ford finished the inning up with an RBI single to right, scoring pinch runner
Kendyl Crean.
Jordyn Wolfe finished 3-for-3 with her RBI double and three runs. Perez went 2-for-2 with an RBI and scoring twice. Ford finished the day 2-for-2 with an RBI. And Crean had a 2-for-3 day with a double and triple.
Saint Leo moves to 2-1 on the season with their final game in the Gulf Shores Invitational set for 12:15 PM against Auburn Montgomery.
