GULF SHORES, Fla. - Saint Leo Softball came up on the short end in their final game of the Gulf Shores Invitational in Gulf Shores, Alabama on Sunday, falling 8-1 at the hands of the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks.Â
Auburn Montgomery put together a four-run third inning against Saint Leo starter
Kayla Betts. Chloe Derric of Auburn Montgomery put the ball in play with two runners on, but a throwing error on the infield allowed the first run of the inning to score. That set up a RBI triple from Gia Martin and then a RBI single from Alex Howard to make it 5-0 Auburn Montgomery after five innings.Â
The Warhawks then added on in the fifth inning with a two-run home run off the bat of Martin to make it a 7-0 ballgame.Â
Saint Leo was held to just four hits on the day off of Warhawks' starter Morgan Ferguson. Ferguson gave up one run to the Lions while striking out six and walking just one. The lone run for the Lions came in the sixth inning on a double steal with
Caroline Barwick on first and
Alyssa Perez on third. Barwick was caught stealing at second, but that allowed Perez to have time to steal home and score.Â
Lions' starter
Kayla Betts went the distance for the Green and Gold. Betts gave up eight runs on ten hits, while striking out five and walking four. Her record drops to 0-2 on the season.Â
Saint Leo finishes the trip to Gulf Shores with a 2-2 record. The Lions will now get ready for the two-day Old Coast Classic hosted by Flagler College on Saturday, February 12 and Sunday, February 13. The Lions will face off against Lenoir-Rhyne and Newberry on both days.Â
