Lions drop a tough test to Mississippi College in Alabama

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Saint Leo Softball team dropped their season game of a doubleheader in the Gulf Shores Invitational on Saturday to Mississippi College, falling 4-2 in just their second game of the season.

The Lions got on the board first in the second inning when Deanna Falciglia hit into a RBI groundout to second that allowed Kendyl Crean to score and give Saint Leo a 1-0 lead.

MIssissippi College answered the Lions' lead in the third with a couple big hits, including a Brooke Fagan RBI double and a Jenna Ergle two-run home run that opened the Choctaws lead to 3-1.

The Lions were able to answer back in the sixth inning when Emily Pilon hit into a sacrifice fly that brought home Ciara Ford to make it 3-2, but that was all the offense wrote for the day.

Mississippi's Avery Barnett went the distance for the Choctaws, throwing seven innings of clutch softball, giving up just two runs on five hits while striking out four Lions and walking two. She earned the win while Saint Leo's Kayla Betts was handed the loss. Betts went five innings giving up three runs on five hits, striking out five, and walking three.

Saint Leo now sits at .500 with a 1-1 record after their first two games in the Gulf Shores Invitational. The Lions are back in action on Sunday for a single game against Delta State at 10:00 A.M. and then one final game against Auburn Montgomery at 12:15 P.M. before heading home to the Sunshine State.
