SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team ended up on the wrong side of an exciting overtime Sunshine State Conference matchup with rival Florida Southern Wednesday night inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The gurgling battle came down to the wire after a series of runs throughout the regulation period. Jumpers were matched, legs were tired from both jerseys, but the Florida Southern Moccasins were just able to slither away with a 78-76 overtime decision. The heartbreaker moved the Green and Gold's overall record to 16-9, 11-6 in the SSC while Florida Southern improved to 16-8, 14-4 in the conference.
Alayna Harris, a sophomore, looked nothing like a young Lion against the Mocs. Harris boxed out her mark off a missed free throw to help the Lions win the defensive team rebound with 12 seconds remaining in regulation. She continued her work under the basket on the opposite coast, snagging a rebound off a missed layup and drew the foul. Calm, cool, and collective, Harris came up big making both throws on the line to lift Saint Leo 70-69 with six seconds left in the fourth. Florida Southern advanced the ball, pulled up a shot that would have been blocked by Harris but the whistle blew, and instead, a foul was called. Florida Southern's Sara Wohlgemuth's first free throw bounced off the iron but she was able to get her second to roll in and force overtime at 70 points apiece.
A five-point run by the Mocs between the 3:07 and 1:47 minute mark ultimately clinched the overtime decision, 78-76.
Alex Button cut the Mocs' lead to one-off a good jumper with 56 seconds left on the clock to make it 77-76. Despite an opportunity under the basket, Florida Southern gained possession and tallied the 78
th point at the charity stripe.
The night began by honoring
Amanda Ulrich with her family by her side as the newest member of the 1,000-point club. Naturally, Ulrich led the team in scoring with 19 points going 7-for-18 from the floor, 3-for-8 beyond the circle, and 2-for-4 at the line. She was joined in scoring double digits by
Ayanna Trigg (17),
Kiki McIntyre (12), and
Alex Button (10). McIntyre broke out a double-double leading the team off the boards with 11 rebounds.
Saint Leo will turn its attention to Saturday, Feb 19 when the Lions close out the regular schedule at home. The program's senior day invites the Lynn Fighting Knights to the Marion Bowman Activities Center for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off.
