SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's basketball team outscored the Florida Southern Moccasins 50-43 in the second half but it wouldn't be enough to overcome a slow start against the Sunshine State Conference rivals. The Mocs split the season series in a 91-84 decision Wednesday night inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The seven-point game moved the Green and Gold's overall record to 10-14, 5-12 in the SSC. Meanwhile, Florida Southern improved its' season mark to 12-13, 9-8 in the league.
Saint Leo suffered a four-minute scoring drought which allowed Florida Southern to go on its largest run of the game, 10-0. The Mocs strike handed the Lions a 12-point hole at 43-41 with 1:53 remaining in the first half. The Lions were able to get on the board off three free throws before the end of the half but found themselves trailing 48-34.
Jared Coomer and
Francis Sio each brought out double-digit points in the second half alone. Coomer got hot, shooting 4-for-5 from the floor, 2-for-2 beyond the circle, and 6-for-6 at the charity stripe. Meanwhile, Sio drained a pair of three-pointers going 3-for-5 from the hardwood and hitting both of his awarded free throws of the last 30 minutes.
The rally slashed the gap down to a mere three points. Sio hit his second three, assisted by
Wade Coomer, with 23 seconds remaining to bring the game to 87-83. Despite the work, the Mocs' made their critical throws on the line to bring it to 89-94 and secured the win with a last-second layup.
Jared Coomer finished his night with a team-high 22 points followed by Sio with 19 points, and
Cantia Rahming with 17. Rahming has made himself a force off the rim, once again earning a team-high for the Green and Gold, this time with seven rebounds.
Saint Leo will move on to its next game, the program's senior night, on Saturday, Feb 19 at 2:00 p.m. The Saturday afternoon will invite the Lynn Fighting Knight's to the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
