Crean homers twice for the Lions in 13-5 win over Newberry

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Saint Leo Softball earned their second win of the day on Saturday in the Old Coast Classic, this time taking down Newberry with 13 runs on 13 hits for a 13-5 win in St. Augustine.

Saint Leo put their foot on the gas in the fourth inning, entering the middle frame with a 3-1 lead. Kendyl Crean got the offense started with her third home run of the day. Crean had already homered in the first game of the day against Lenoir-Rhyne, and then took Newberry deep in the second inning to get Saint Leo on the board. This time it was the start of a five-run fourth inning, making it 4-1 Lions. Ciara Ford followed suit a RBI single with the bases loaded that scored Bayley Williams. Alyssa Perez then reached on a fielder's choice that moved the runners up allowing Alexandra Hare to score from third. Isabella Andujar then drew a bases-loaded walk that continued the inning. Crean would then come to the plate for the second time in the fourth inning, drawing a bases-loaded walk that increased Saint Leo's lead to 8-1.

Saint Leo on the day homered four different times. Three from the aforementioned Kendyl Crean, and then finally coming from Emily Pilon in the seventh inning to give Saint Leo some insurance with a comfortable 12-4 lead on a two-run shot to left. It was Pilon's first home run of the season.

Morgan Shannon got the start and win for the Lions. Shannon went three innings giving up four runs on three hits and walking seven, while also striking out four. Shannon now stands at 2-0 on the season and a 3.11 ERA through three appearances and two starts. Kayla Betts came on in relief and got the job done, giving up just one run on two hits while striking out six.

Saint Leo moves to 4-2 on the season with their two wins on Saturday before facing off with Lenoir-Rhyne and Newberry again on Sunday in the Old Coast Classic at Flagler College.
