ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Saint Leo Baseball bounced back and defeated Flagler in game one of their doubleheader on Saturday, 7-2, less than 24 hours after suffering a tough loss on Friday night via a walk-off by the Saints.Â
The Saints got on the board first in the third inning, but Saint Leo responded quickly in the top of the fourth when NCBWA All-American
Paul Coumoulos singled down the right field line to drive in the game-tying run in
Bobby Sparling from second, who led off the inning with a double. Affter
Mike Wyman doubled to move Coumoulos over to third,
Tyler Trovinger flied out to right to bring home Coumoulos, giving Saint Leo a 2-1 lead.Â
After Flagler was able to tie the ballgame in the sixth, the Lions retook the lead in seventh. Back-to-back singles from
Buck Anderson and
Dylan McDonald led off the inning. Then
Sam Crail brought home Anderson from third thanks to a fielder's choice on the infield to give Saint Leo a 3-2 lead. Coumoulos would later single to right to move Crail over to third, setting up
Mike Wyman to again make contact and single to left, giving the Lions a 4-2 lead. The Green and Gold would not look back after the seventh.Â
Bobby Sparling continued his tear at the plate in this early part of the season. Sparling gave the Lions a five-run cushion in the top of the ninth with a two-run home run to left to give Saint Leo a 7-2 lead. It's Sparling's third home run of the season, and ninth and tenth RBI's of the year, a team-high.Â
The Lions pounded out 18 hits on the day off Flagler pitching, four of which came from first baseman
Mike Wyman, who had a 4-for-5 day at the plate, driving in a run.Â
Dariel Fregio got the start and win for the Lions, going six innings giving up two runs on three hits and walking three, while striking out five. Fregio is now 2-0 in his two starts this season.
Drew Rudsinski came on for the last three innings and earned his first save of the year. He gave up just one hit and struck out two.Â
The Lions move to 5-2 on the season with one more game against Flagler on Saturday to wrap up their three-game series.Â
