Women's Basketball Improves to 3-0 With Win Over Eagles

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team defeated Trinity Baptist College Saturday Afternoon, 106-37. The Lions will improve to 3-0 on the season, marking their best start since 2014-15 season.

Five players recorded double digits on the night for the Green & Gold. Freshman Anastasiya Astapenka finished with a season-high, career-high, and team-high 15 points, and seven rebounds. Amanda Ulrich tied Astapenka, scoring a total of 15 points of her own. Alex Button finished her night with 12 points, shooting 2-4 from three-point range. Lauren McCrea had some big shots off the bench, recording 11 points and Tamara Shash finished with 10.

The Lions defense played a huge impact during this non-conference showdown. Saint Leo forced a total of 59 turnovers, snagging 32 steals against Trinity Baptist. Shash and Astapenka played a huge role on the defense recording a team-high six steals a piece. Jumoke Adaramoye was right behind her with five steals. Saint Leo would keep the pressure on Trinity Baptist throughout the first half going into the locker room with a 51-point lead.

Saint Leo opened the game recording a shutout first quarter by the score of 28-0. The Lions carried what would be their largest run of the game into the second half jumping out to a 30-0 run. Oceane Tabbak would get the Eagles their first bucket of the game at 9:16 in the second quarter. The Lions would shoot their best free throw percentage in the second quarter, recoding an 85.7% (6-for-7).

In the second half the Green & Gold shot for their best field goal percentage, recording a 62.5% (10-for-16) from the field in the third quarter. The Lions closed out the game holding their biggest lead of the game at 71 points in the fourth quarter.

The Lions will travel to Kissimmee on November 21st to face non-conference opponent Johnson University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 PM.
