SAINT LEO, Fla. – Sweet overtime victory. The Saint Leo men's basketball team got it done in the Marion Bowman Activities Center Wednesday night against Sunshine State Conference foe, Eckerd. The drama unfolded an 87-85 win for the Saint Leo Lions, lifting the team's season record to 8-9, 5-7 in the SSC. The overtime decision lowered the Tritons' season mark to 3-12, 1-11 in the conference.
Wade Coomer paced the Green and Gold offense with a tremendous 29 points. The senior shooter went 9-for-13 all from downtown. He also was perfect on the free throw line going 2-for-2. He was joined in scoring double digits by three other Lions:
Grant Disken (14),
Francis Sio (14), and
Frank Webb Jr. (10). Webb Jr. kept the ball moving with the team's most assists with eight. Sio finished the night just short of a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds. He was helped off the boards by teammate
Cantia Rahming with eight rebounds.
Saint Leo tallied its' largest lead of 11 at 59-48 in the second with 11:27 remaining. The game of runs didn't allow the 11-point gap to last long. Eckerd forced the overtime period to convert a pair of free throws and sunk a three-pointer in the last 13 seconds of regulation. Overtime held more of the same tough battle. With four seconds left on the clock,
Wade Coomer earned a defensive rebound while being fouled. Coomer hit both tosses at the charity stripe to hand Saint Leo an 86-83 lead. Eckerd hit their awarded free throw to bring the game within one, 86-85.
Grant Disken ensured the game by bringing the ball up the court and tallying a good free throw for the 87-85 final.
Saint Leo returns to action on Saturday, Jan 29 on the road at Embry-Riddle. The Eagles and Lions are scheduled to tip-off at 6:00 p.m. in Daytona Beach, Fla.
