Lions Ledger: Men's Lacrosse and Baseball Close Out the Regular Season

  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 3-5, 3-2 SSC | No. 2 Tampa: 7-0, 5-0 SSC | Florida Tech: 2-4, 1-3 SSC
  • Saint Leo looks to return to its winning ways after taking two losses from Palm Beach Atlantic (14-10) and Rollins (17-9). The last week of the season are two games rescheduled after the Green and Gold suffered multiple schedule changes this year.
  • Tyler Eames paces the Green and Gold offense with 15 points as the leading scorer with 15 goals and 10 assists. He is supported by Matt Shand with 20 points with a team-high 15 assists and five goals. Faceoff Specialists, Jordan Williams, enters the last week of the season going 75-for-163 (.460) at the X. In the cage, Gunnar Luckoski has earned all eight starts in which he compiled a 3-5 record. Luckoski has earned 113 saves after facing 342 shots for a .511 save percentage. He averages 4.39 goals allowed per game.
  • No. 2 Tampa returned to action after a couple weeks without contests. The Spartans played on Saturday, May 1 hosting the Florida Tech Panthers in which Tampa extended its' win streak with a 14-9 decision.
  • Jack Wood leads the Spartans offense with 37 points (17g, 20a) followed by Ben Frech with 35 points (25g, 10a). At the X, Ross Dickerson has tallied a .747 win percentage winning 102-of-137. Goalkeeper, Blake Ulmer has earned all seven starts. Ulmer has put up 64 saves while allowing 6.29 goals per game.
  • HISTORY: Saint Leo and Tampa opened the 2021 season on Friday, March 19 in University Turf Stadium in a non-conference game. The Lions dropped the home opener, 24-8. Matt Shand led the Green and Gold's offensive efforts with four points from three assists and a goal. Liam Mueller helped the efforts with a pair of goals. Mueller tallied the first two goals for Saint Leo, both assisted by Shand. Five other Lions were able to break through the Spartan's defensive line and get on the board. In the net, Gunnar Luckoski earned 15 stops on the night.
  • Florida Tech fell 14-9 on Saturday to Tampa. Before closing the season with the Lions, the Panthers will travel to Rollins on Friday, May 7 for a 1 p.m. game.
  • On the season, Reid Chaconas has collected 20 points (15g, 5a) while teammate Chandler Hake has earned 18 (13g, 7a), followed closely by Zach Rozgonyl with 17 points (13g, 4a). Ethan Tosheff has won 59-of-141 faceoffs for the Panthers. Goalkeepers Kyle Renz and Vincent Palermo have split time. Renz has started twice and earned 15 saves putting together a 1-1 record. Palermo has earned three starts earning 43 stops and a 1-3 record.
  • HISTORY: The Lions and Panthers danced earlier this season. On Saturday, March 27 Saint Leo topped Florida Tech 18-15 in University Turf Stadium. Tyler Eames paced the successful offensive day with four points scoring two goals and two assists followed by Guy Bistrow with a pair of goals and an assist for three points. Justin Williams had a tremendous day scoring a career-high hat-trick off three shots. Devin Sparks and Ryan Marek joined the fun with two goals apiece while Peyton Tyson contributed two points with a goal and an assist. Meanwhile, Michael Flores earned a game-high eight ground balls going 10-for-19 at the face. Sharing the responsibilities at the 'X', Jordan Williams earned four ground balls going 9-for-16. Luckoski earned the win in the cage with 15 saves in 60 minutes of work.
  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 8-16, 7-15 SSC | Barry 13-10, 11-7 SSC
  • Saint Leo concludes the 2021 regular season Saturday as the Lions travel to Miami Shores to complete a three-game series with Barry which began March 4. The Lions hosted the opening game of the series back in March before COVID protocols forced the postponement of the doubleheader at Barry originally scheduled for March 6.
  • Redshirt junior Paul Coumoulos boasted his average above .400 this past weekend and now leads the team and the Sunshine State Conference with a .404 batting average. Senior Sam Crail picked up two doubles versus Nova Southeastern to take over the doubles lead in the team with seven on the season while classmate Jake Vander Wal continues to lead in triples (2) and homeruns (7). Vander Wal also holds the team lead in RBI (26), walks (14) and runs scored (22).
  • Redshirt junior Devin Blair continues to lead the pitching staff with a 2-0 record on the mound while redshirt sophomore Jared Beck and redshirt senior Jimmy Burnette are tied for the team lead in wins with two. Beck is 2-3 on the year while Burnette moved to 2-5. Sophomore Andy Booth and redshirt freshman Manny Sado are the only Lion pitchers with below a 3.00 ERA so far this season as Sado has a perfect 0.00 ERA through 1.0 inning pitched and Booth sits at 2.87 through 15.2 innings. Burnette now leads the team in strikeouts with 45 while also leading the team in innings pitched at 38.0. Six different pitchers have started games for the Lions this season with Burnette leading the way with seven starts.
  • Barry most recently split a four-game series with Lynn winning one game at home and one on the road including winning two of the three SSC contests. Richie Sobalvarro leads the team in batting average at .314 and is followed closely by Ihosvany Castaneda at .311. Sobalvarro also leads the team in doubles with five while four Buccaneers including Castaneda share the team lead in homeruns with two. Blake Brito and Andrew Rapoza have each driven in a team-best 15 runs. The pitching staff has three hurlers with a below 3.00 ERA while Arrison Perez leads the squad with a 4-2 record. The Buccaneers have sent five different starting pitchers to the mound with Frank Gonzalez II leading the way with eight starts. Gonzalez also leads the team in innings pitched at 49.0 and strikeouts with 52.
  • HISTORY: The Lions and Buccaneers did not meet during the shortened 2020 season but Barry took the 2019 series 2-1 in Miami Shores following a sweep by the Lions in 2018 at home. Barry won the opening game of the series back in March 12-3. Blake Brito led the Bucs at the plate going 4-for-5 with four RBI in the nine-hole. Two others had three hits while three more had a pair of hits. Yazael Nunez was the lone Lion with multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 at the dish.
