Cheerleading Wraps Up UCA Nationals in Fourth

Apr 28, 2021

SAINT LEO, Fla. – With CoVID restrictions and the safety of the cheerleaders in mind, the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) College National Championships allowed for in-person and virtual competitions for the 2021 Championships. Saint Leo competed virtually where the Green and Gold placed fourth.

Saint Leo, moving up to the Division I All-Girl traditional competition this year, took fourth place with a score of 74.95. UCA split in-person competitors and virtual competitors this year to even the playing field where the Green and Gold found themselves in fourth place virtually behind Eastern Kentucky (first, 93.25), Rhode Island (second, 87.65), and Stony Brook (third, 83.2).

After a long year of work and small group practice, the team put together a full routine just weeks before the national championships. "This team has overcome so many obstacles with covid protocols," head coach Haylee Monk stated. "I am so proud of the 15 student-athletes that took the mat to compete and represent the Lions this year. They are building a legacy here and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for our program."

The teams competed April 10-11 for a round of semifinals to be scored before the routines went on for the finals.

Following the conclusion of the season and after seeing the hard work and dedication put forth by student-athletes all year, team captains Logan Gardner, Sydnee Daniels, and Katelan Sherouse, along with assistant coach Vince Mele and Head Coach Monk selected Sydnee Daniels as the 2020-21 MVP and tabbed Layla Gilyard as the Rookie of the Year.

Daniels, a sophomore from Auburndale, Fla. is a two-year member of the Green and Gold's Cheerleading squad and is heavily involved around campus on top of being a team captain, she works in athletics, is a student ambassador for University Admissions she is also a member of LEAD Scholars.

Gilyard, a freshman from Wesley Chapel, Fla. is a huge strength for the team. She has a positive attitude, is the muscle under the pyramids, and is always willing to go the extra mile for her teammates.
