Lions Ledger: Another Busy April Week for Saint Leo Athletics

  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 2-3, 2-2 SSC | Palm Beach Atlantic 0-5, 0-4 SSC | Florida Tech 2-3, 1-3 SSC
  • Saint Leo looks to return to its' winning ways after falling short 11-10 in a battle that came down to the last 20 seconds against Lynn. The Lions are currently seeded fourth among conference standings.
  • Tyler Eames paces the offense with 16 points from 11 goals and five assists. He is followed by play maker Matt Shand with 15 points from 13 assists and a pair of goals. Evan Wray with 11 points and Guy Bistrow with 10, round off the Green and Gold's double digit point leaders.
  • Jordan Williams and Michael Flores have shared time at the face. Williams leads the Lions with 30 followed by Flores with 19.
  • In the net, Gunnar Luckoski is coming off a career-high and program record 24 saves against the Fighting Knights. Luckoski enters the game with a 2-3 record, capturing 74 saves and a .497 save percentage. The senior keeper currently allows 14.98 goals per game.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic is still in search of its first win of the season. Last week, PBA dropped a 10-5 decision against Rollins.
  • Ben Justice leads the Sailfish's offensive efforts with seven points from six goals and an assist. Meanwhile, Noah McKoeun is PBA's primary faceoff specialist. McKoeun heads to Saint Leo, Fla. with 18 FO wins in his pocket.
  • In the net, Lee Rowden and Gerrit Kurtycz have each earned two starts. Rowden has earned a team-high 33 saves, allowing an average of 17.33 goals per game.
  • HISTORY: Saint Leo will finally face the Sailfish after several delays. The teams last met on March 22, 2019 when the Lions downed the Sailfish 21-5.
  • Florida Tech will host Saint Leo after a midweek game at Rollins. The Panthers last saw action on Tuesday, April 6 in a 13-9 win over Florida Southern.
  • The Panthers list five who have earned double figure points in five appearances. Florida Tech's scoring is led by Chandler Hake, Reid Chaconas, and Zach Rozgonyi with 11 goals apiece.
  • At the X, Ethan Tosheff has won 51 faceoffs. In the net, four goal keepers have seen action. Kyle Renz (1-1) and Vincent Palermo (1-2) have each earned two starts. Palermo has put up 27 saves helped by Renz with 15.
  • HISTORY: Saturday will mark the Lions and Panthers second meeting of the season; this time being played as a non-conference meeting. On March 27, 2021, Saint Leo put together more shots, saves, and faceoffs to beat out the Panthers 18-15 in University Turf Stadium.
  • Saint Leo men's and women's track heads back to Tampa for another Tri-Meet Friday night. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and feature the Lions, Spartans and Mocs of Florida Southern.
  • Junior Paige Patterson of the women's team recently competed at Embry-Riddle and posted the eighth fastest 3,000m steeplechase time in NCAA Division II this season while winning the event.
  • Senior Shane Bracken currently has the eighth fastest 800m time in NCAA Division II this season as well as a provisional qualifying 1,500m time.
  • Friday will mark the second trip to the University of Tampa this season for the Lions. Two school records fell in the last trip including the 800m time by Bracken and the Sprint Medley Relay on the men's side. Junior Aoife Mahony also won the 800m on the women's side.

  • Saint Leo baseball turns its attention to nationally-ranked University of Tampa this weekend. The Lions will host the Spartans Friday night before heading to UT for a doubleheader on Saturday.
  • The Lions split a non-conference doubleheader with the Spartans earlier this season including winning a walk-off second game 5-4.
  • Redshirt junior Paul Coumoulos moved into first on the team in batting average this past weekend with a .333 average for the season. Redshirt senior Danny Torres leads the team in hits with 21 and is tied for the team lead in doubles with four. Senior Jake Vander Wal has driven in a team-best 21 runs while leading the team with five home runs and two triples.
  • Redshirt junior Devin Blair leads the pitching staff with a 2-0 record on the mound while redshirt sophomore Jared Beck recently earned his second victory and sits at 2-2. Andy Booth (2.13) and Yazael Nunez (0.00) are the two Lion pitchers with below a 3.00 ERA so far this season. Jimmy Burnette now leads the team in strikeouts with 30 and while Beck leads in innings pitched at 24.2. Six different pitchers have started games for the Lions this season with Jestin Jones and Burnette leading the way with five each.
  • No. 8 Tampa has won 11 of the last 12 games since falling to the Lions early in the season. John Malcom leads the team with a .415 batting average and 20 RBI. E.J. Cumbo has launched a team-best five home runs while also leading the team with five doubles. The Spartans have used three starting pitchers this season. Six of the 11 pitchers who have seen action have a below 3.00 ERA including two with a perfect 0.00 mark. Michael Paul has seen the most action at 29.1 innings pitched while Jordan Leasure leads the team with 34 strikeouts. Paul leads the team with a perfect 5-0 record while Eric Linder sits at 4-0 on the year.
  • HISTORY: The Lions and Spartans have met 175 times on the diamond with the Spartans having a 131-44 edge in the series.
  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 15-8, 12-6 SSC | Tampa 10-3, 9-2 SSC
  • Saint Leo enters the series with Tampa after snapping a four-game skid this past Saturday with late game rallies against Florida Tech. The Lions took the first game Saturday 6-2 with four runs in the ninth inning off the bat of senior stud Kacie Kelly before the Green and Gold dominate in game two 12-5.
  • Kacie Kelly leads the team with a .391 batting average, hits (25), doubles (7), RBI (15), walks (7), total bases (34), and is tied for the lead in runs scored (11).
  • Kelly set the new career doubles record in program history with her 51st Thursday night before adding two more Saturday. The Jacksonville, Fla. native currently sits at 53 and counting heading into the final two series of the season.
  • Alexandra Hare had a big weekend for the Lions going 8-for-15 from the plate with five runs scored and is second on the team in RBI (10) and runs scored (10).
  • From the circle, Kayla Betts turns in the best record, 7-2, and has made 12 appearances for 60.1 Innings of work while fanning 68 batters which is the second best in the SSC.
  • Morgan Shannon holds the team's low ERA, standing at 0.90 in 40 innings of work over 12 appearances.
  • Tampa is currently riding a 10-game win streak after starting the year off 0-3 and is now 10-3 with a 9-2 SSC record. The Spartans are coming off a four-game sweep of the Fighting Knights, which two games were in extra innings. Tampa earned 2-0, 3-2 (10 innings), 7-2, and 2-1 (8 innings) victories over Lynn.
  • Lauren Fantone leads the Spartans in batting average at .324 in 12 games played with a team-best nine RBI.
  • Mariah Galhouse is the team leader in hits with 14 where she holds the team low ERA at 0.78 in 45 innings with a 5-1 record. Corynn Miner has seven appearances and is 5-2 in 46 innings with a team top 50 strikeouts while holding a 1.07 ERA.
  • History The Lions are 8-10 against the Spartans under the guideance of Coach Erin Kinberger and is looking to win its first series against Tampa since 2016 when the Green and Gold swept the series three games to zero. Tampa swept the 2017 series before taking the 2018, 2019 and the 2020 series two games to one.
  • RECORDS: No. 23 Saint Leo 4-4, 3-3 SSC | Palm Beach Atlantic 1-5, 1-5 SSC
  • No. 23 Saint Leo recovered from a tight 15-14 overtime loss to No. 6 Tampa by overwhelming Lynn 23-14. Ashlee Salvett was named the SSC Offensive Player of the Week for her tremendous week facing the No. 6 Spartans and Fighting Knights. Wilsynki broke out for 14 points, scoring nine goals and five assists against No. 6 Tampa and Lynn. Wilsynski slung 18 total shots with 12 landing on frame for a .667 shot on goal percentage. She added four draw controls and a caused turnover to her week.
  • On the season, Wilsynski leads the team with 33 points (24g, 9a) followed by 30 points from Fiona McLaughlin (29g, 1a) and Delaney Chrisco (26g, 4a). Ashley Salvett paces the Lions at the rerestart with 33 draw controls and is helped by Chrisco with 24.
  • Emma Crafton (3-4) has earned 65 saves while facing 202 shots. The senior keeper has compiled a .433 save percentage while allowing an average of 12.08 goals per game. Rachel Smythe (1-0) has seen three games of action where she has earned seven saves.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic is looking to snap a four-game losing skid. Last week, the Sailfish dropped a 19-13 decision to the Panthers of Florida Tech followed by a 14-8 to No. 9 Rollins
  • Kiki Cinotti enters the week with 34 points scoring 20 goals paired with 14 assists. Meanwhile, Anna Laskaris leads the Sailfish off the draw with 21.
  • Abigal Nehring (1-4) and Sarah Vernarelli (0-1) has protected PBA's net. Nehring has recorded 43 saves, .377 save percentage, and allows an average of 16.45 goals per game.
  • History the teams last meet back on April 6, 2019. Saint Leo rolled past PBA, 26-6. Kaylah Walstad became the program's newest all-time assist leader recording four assists against the Sailfish for a career tally of 49 assists. Meanwhile, Leslie Ferguson broke a game record with 10 points and Sabrina Sanacore reached a career milestone of 100 points.
