Lions Sink Sailfish in Sweep, 3-0

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team earned just its third sweep of the season as the Lions took down the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 3-0 Friday night. The Lions were led by senior Brooke Turner and junior Madi Certain who each reached double-digit kills in the victory.

The win moves the Lions' record to 7-11 overall and 3-7 in Sunshine State Conference play while the Sailfish fell to 8-10 overall and 4-6 in league action. Saint Leo has now won five of the last six matches versus the Sailfish, a run that began with a 3-2 victory in West Palm Beach in 2017 which snapped an eight-match win streak by the Sailfish in the series. PBA was ranked No. 3 at the time of the upset.

Turner paced the Lions with 12 kills on 28 attacks while finishing with a .321 hitting percentage. She also added four digs and a pair of assists. Certain chipped in 10 kills and a team-best 12 digs to play a well-rounded match. The junior also added a service ace.

Senior setter Anna Garrison dealt out 37 assists in the three-set match while digging up six balls and assisting on four blocks. She also added three sneaky kills from her setter spot. Sophomore Madelyn Eden had a strong performance at home finishing with nine kills on 16 attacks with a .438 hitting percentage. She also added a pair of blocks including one solo. Freshman Colby Stempkowski had one of the best matches of her young career with eight kills, no errors and a .615 hitting percentage. She also led the team with five block assists on the night.

Senior libero Payton Bellano was the only other Lion than Certain to reach double-digits in digs with 10.

The Lions held the Sailfish to a .148 hitting percentage while posting a strong .294 percentage of their own. Saint Leo snuck away with the opening set 26-24 before leading nearly start to finish in the second and third set winning 25-17 and 25-20, respectively.

Jazz Schmidt led the Sailfish with 11 kills, eight of which came in the opening frame.

The Lions return home tomorrow, Oct. 16 as they welcome in Lynn for a 4 p.m. match-up.
