SAINT LEO, Fla. – A late lead change in the second half saw Saint Leo men's basketball fall to Rollins 65-62 inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center Saturday night in Sunshine State Conference action.
Following the loss, head coach
Lance Randall stated, "Rollins did a great job of taking away our interior scoring in the zone. Kyran kept us in that game. Too many turnovers and execution issues but more importantly we had issues with getting stops and defensive rebounds when we got them."
Â
A 3:07 scoring drought down the stretch haunted Saint Leo (14-9, 8-7 SSC) on a night where
Kyran McClure dropped 31 points against Rollins (12-10, 6-8 SSC). McClure made all nine shots on the night from beyond the arc where he added a 4-for-5 night from the charity stripe.
Â
The senior guard from Concord, N.C. was the lone player to crack double-digits for Saint Leo, where he scored 16 first-half points before adding 15 in the second half.
"Monday and Tuesday, we had great practices heading into Tampa. Thursday and Friday after beating Tampa we acted like we arrived. Our practices were poor. I can't help but think there's a direct correlation there," said Randall.
Â
Randall concluded, "Kyran gave us a chance to win a four minute game. Malik was good on both sides of the ball tonight but quite frankly, Rollins gave us what we deserved."
Â
The Lions led for 24:25 of game time while the contest saw 10:39 of even play with the score knotted up. The Tars used 20 fast-break points to and 16 bench points to come back against the Green and Gold and steal a game in the Bowman Center. Saint Leo got off to a blazing start and saw its largest lead of 11 points, 13-2, in the first half before heading into the break all squared, 34-34.Â
A back-and-forth second half saw Saint Leo capture a six-point, 58-52, lead with 7:41 remaining but it would be the Tars that battled back and tie things at 60 all with 5:16 on the clock. Rollins would climb out to a 65-62 lead with 1:34 showing on the clock. Looking to tie things up, down by three, Saint Leo attempted one final three-pointer, but couldn't get it to fall as the final horn sounded down by three, 65-62.Â
