Lions Ledger: Busy Weekend on the Road for the Lions

Tennis, Women's Lacrosse and Basketballs host events this weekend

  • The Saint Leo men's and women's track programs wrap-up the indoor portion of their regular season this weekend at the South Carolina Invitational.
  • Saint Leo has run in four indoor events so far this season but this will mark the first outside of the Birmingham Crossplex where the first four meets took place.
  • Junior Tadgh McGinty picked up the lone top-10 finish for the men last weekend in Birmingham as he took 10th in the 5,000m. He crossed the finish line in 15:37.59.
  • Sophomore Paige Patterson led the women last weekend with a fourth place finish in the 5,000m. The Edmonton, Alberta native crossed the line in 17:31.32. Senior Ashley Lindeman joined her in seventh at 18:13.04 for a pair of top-10 finishers.

  • Saint Leo travels to Melbourne after going 4-0 at the Gulf Shores Invitational last weekend, posting wins over RV Mississippi College (3-2, eight innings), Spring Hill (10-2, six innings), No. 4 West Florida (5-2), and Mile (13-2, five innings).
  • After helping guide the Green and Gold to a come back against Mississippi College and leading the charge the rest of the weekend, Alexis Miniet was named the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week.
  • Taylor McCray is the team leader in average (.625) while Miniet and Kacie Kelly are leading the way in hits with six apiece.

  • Saint Leo opened the 2020 season going 0-3 at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla. against Columbus State, Barton and #5 Catawba. The Lions will look to get back on track at Lee, a team the Lions swept in a three-game series last season.
  • The Lions have been led by senior Amir Wright at the plate. Wright boasts a .462 batting average through three games with two doubles, three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Other notable bats include senior Jacob Reimold (.385) and sophomore Mike Wyman (.308). Junior Sam Crail leads the team in both home runs (2) and RBI (6). On the mound, sophomore Ruddy Gomez has seen the most action at 4.0 innings pitched. He also has the most strikeouts with six. Freshman Andy Booth has the top ERA for pitchers who have gone 2.0 or more innings at 3.00.
  • Lee opened 2020 with a three-game sweep of Urbana at home before dropping a single contest to Young Harris on the road 1-0. The Flames went 23-26 a year ago and won 27 games in 2018.
  • Sophomore Joshua Perez enters as Lee's top hitter with a .385 batting average. He has a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Senior Alan Smith has driven in the most runs this season at five and has a double and a home run. Three Flame pitchers boast a 1-0 record with junior Logan Workman leading the way with a perfect 0-00 ERA after 5.0 innings of work. Sophomore Tyler Fairchild has seen the most action at 6.0 innings and also has a perfect 0.00 ERA . Junior Alan Carter has a team-best eight strikeouts over 5.0 innings of work.
  • HISTORY: The Lions and Flames have met nine times over the last three seasons in Saint Leo. This weekend's trip will be the first for Saint Leo to Cleveland, Tenn. The Lions trail in the all-time series 5-4 but Saint Leo has won the four most recent meetings.

  • Saint Leo looks to return to the win column after a tough loss at nationally-ranked Tampa this past Wednesday. The Lions have won three of their last four home contests this season and look to extend their lead over the Tars in the Sunshine State Conference standings.
  • Junior Alani Gallagher is coming off a career-high rebounding performance at Tampa where she secured 18 boards in the loss. The effort came just two days after being named the SSC Defensive Player of the Week for her play against Florida Southern and Nova Southeastern. Freshman Amanda Ulrich currently leads the squad in scoring with 14.7 points per game and she is joined in double-figures by Gallagher (13.9) and sophomore Alex Button (13.3).
  • Ulrich currently ranks sixth in the SSC in scoring (14.7 ppg), eighth in assist/turnover ratio (1.1) and 10th in assists (2.9 apg) this season while Gallagher ranks second in blocked shots per game (1.4) and fourth in rebounding (8.1 rpg). Button currently ranks first in the SSC in 3-point field goal percentage (.427), sixth in 3-point field goals per game (1.9), eighth in free throw percentage (.829) and 10th in field goal percentage (.492).
  • Rollins is coming off a 69-65 overtime victory over Nova Southeastern in Winter Park. Prior to the victory the Tars had lost four of their last five contests. Rollins is 0-2 in its two most recent road contests including a 62-57 loss at Embry-Riddle and a 72-58 setback at Lynn.
  • Senior Jaylyn Harrison is the lone Tar who is averaging double-figures this season at 10.9 points per game. Junior Rachel Lia and freshman Paris Sharpe are just outside double-figures at 9.5 ppg and 9.0 ppg, respectively. Senior Denise Daniels leads the team down low with 7.0 rebounds per game.
  • Daniels ranks seventh in the SSC in rebounding (7.0) while Harrison ranks third in 3-point field goals per game (2.3), third in assist/turnover ratio (2.3), seventh in assists (3.2) and eighth in 3-point field goal percentage (.355). Junior Rachel Lia ranks ninth in free throw percentage (.813). Freshman Paris Sharpe comes in at 10th in blocked shots (0.6).
  • HISTORY: Last season, the Tars and Lions split the season, each winning at the other's facilities. In the Marion Bowman Activities Center on December 29, 2018, Rollins escaped with a 67-54 decision. The Lions returned the favor in the Warden Arena on February 2, 2019, clinching a 53-51 victory, as Casey Wortley sunk a buzzer beater jumper. Earlier this year in Winter Park, Rollins captured a 76-62 victory. Button paced the Saint Leo offense with 17 points followed by Gallagher with 15 points, Ulrich with 12 points and freshman Casey O'Shaughnessy with 11. The Tars out rebounded the Lions, 65-33, with 28 of the host's rebounds coming from the offensive rim.

  • Saint Leo hosts Rollins after dominating Tampa Wednesday night, 71-46. Kyran McClure led the charge with 20 points while Isaiah Hill added 19 points with Yalen Reed adding 11.
  • On the year, McClure leads the team in scoring with 21.1 points per game while Isaiah Hill (17.2 ppg) and Rusty Moorer (10.9 ppg) join in double-figures.
  • Saint Leo sits in eighth in the league in scoring at 79.5 ppg while sitting atop the defensive category at 73.9 ppg.
  • Rollins travels to the Bowman Center after falling short against No. 5 Nova Southeastern Wednesday, 89-85 where Jakobi Bonner scored a game-high 22 points.
  • Bonner is the team leader on the season at 17.5 ppg while Hutton Yenor is second at 12.7 ppg.
  • The Tars are 10th in the league in scoring at 76.8 while sitting second in defense at 75.2.
  • HISTORY: In the matchup earlier this season, the Lions came away with a one-point win in Winter Park where it was Isaiah Hill leading the way with 20 points. The Green and Gold held the Tars to just 17 first half points, before getting lit up in the second half for 45 points.
