Saint Leo Drops a Pair to Embry-Riddle Saturday

SAINT LEO, Fla. – After opening up Sunshine State Conference play with a win Friday, Saint Leo baseball looked to carry the momentum to the doubleheader Saturday but dropped both ends of the twinbill to Embry-Riddle at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.

Looking to win the first SSC series of the season, the Lions dropped both games Saturday to fall to 2-10 overall and 1-2 in league play. Embry-Riddle took the first game 13-5 before following it up with a 13-2 decision; the Eagles move to 10-3, 2-1 SSC.

The Green and Gold saw eight different players pick up a hit on the night while 10 players reached base safely in the 18 innings. Danny Torres, Amir Wright, Sam Crail and James McCallum each tallied an extra-base knock on the day.

In the first game of the day, Embry-Riddle used a four run fourth to jump all over the Green and Gold before the Lions rallied for two in the sixth and one in the seventh to sit behind 6-3. Leading 7-3 heading to the final frame, the Eagles plated six runs in the top of the ninth while the Lions answered with two, falling 13-5.

ERAU looked to get things going again early with one run in the second and three in the third before holding a 6-0 lead after four and a half innings of play. Torres doubled to left center scoring McCallum from first for the first run of the rubbermatch. The Eagles tacked on another in the top of the sixth while the Lions answered in the bottom of the inning with a fielder's choice dropping in right field scoring Crail.

Another big top of the ninth saw the contest get out of reach as the Eagles led 13-2 after a five run ninth. Saint Leo would go down in order in the ninth to drop the doubleheader Saturday, 13-2.

The Lions will host Flagler for a midweek matchup on February 25 at 6 p.m. at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
