Lions Drop Season Opener to the Fire in 104'

LAKELAND, Fla. – Saint Leo men's soccer looked to open the season with a win but fell in extra-time to the Southeastern Fire 1-0 at the Southeastern University (SEU) Soccer Complex Friday night.
 
The Lions fought the Fire to a 0-0 regulation period before the two teams went scoreless in the first extra-time period. SEU would put the ball in the back of the net in the 104th minute as Jake Van Der Luit notched his third goal of the season.

Saint Leo (0-1) took 12 shots during the 104 minutes of action placing four of them on net. Southeastern blasted 13 shots landing 6 of them on frame. The Fire doubled up the Lions in corner kicks, 8-4.

Senior Wessel Berenschot, made his 10th career start for the Green and Gold making five key saves during the match. Southeastern split time among three keepers with Bryce Mitchell and Logan Whitney recording two saves each, however, it was Carlos Curado logging the most minutes in the net with 46:15.
 
Dylan Moriera tallied three shots during the contest to pace the Lions with Pietro Vagnone and Noah Nixon right behind at two apiece.
 
Saint Leo will look to bounce back on Sunday, Sept. 8 at West Florida in Pensacola, Fla. with a game time of 1:30 p.m.
