Sharks Score Late to Secure Series Opener

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team were tied late with the Nova Southeastern Sharks Friday night but a pair of eighth inning runs proved to be the difference for NSU as they walked away with a 6-4 victory. Junior Jacob Reimold hits his team-high tying sixth home run of the season to drive in three runs in the sixth, giving the Lions a 3-2 lead.

Senior Jared Morello drove in the only other run of the game as he tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh. Morello drove home redshirt senior Derek Gibree who led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Morello drove the ball through the left side of the infield.

The Sharks then plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the victory. After a leadoff groundout, the Sharks sent a single through the right side just past the diving Danny Torres. The Lions attempted a pick off at first but the ball went down the right field fence allowing the runner to reach third. The go-ahead run scored when a high pop up found no man's land behind second base and in front of the left and center fielders. The batter reached all the way to second on the high pop. The next batter dropped a single into left field adding an insurance run for the home team.

Junior Joey Antonopoulos suffered the loss for the Lions after coming into pitch in the seventh. He struck out the side in his first inning but suffered a four-hit eighth which allowed two runs to score. He finished with 1.2 innings pitched. Freshman Ruddy Gomez started the game for the Lions and went 6.0 innings with three strikeouts, a pair of walks, four runs allowed and six hits given up. Junior Trevor Sanchez pitched the final third of an inning while picking up a fly out to centerfield.

The loss drops Saint Leo to 16-16 overall and 5-8 in Sunshine State Conference action. The Sharks improved to 22-12 this season and 11-8 in league play.

The Lions and Sharks will finish up the series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
